Torcello is possibly to loveliest island in the Venetian lagoon
Torcello is an out-of-the-way island with fields of salt morass and a touch of melancholy. It lies within the northern part of the lagoon and boasts a remarkably luminous 11th century church, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, with marvelous mosaics. Its rude brick bell tower is an adventure to climb, but offers a splendid view.
